NYC Raising Age to Buy Cigarettes to 21!!!

New York City council members have voted to ban tobacco sales to people younger than 21 in the latest Wednesday, and this will be among the toughest age limits in the US. Therefore, buying cigarettes in New York City will become much more difficult for young people.

The tobacco dependence and addiction can form very soon after a young person first tries smoking, this rule could same many lives. Now, New York is the biggest city to bar cigarette sales to 19 and 20-year-olds so far. A similar legislation is expected to come to a vote in Hawaii this December. Actually, Needham, Mass., a suburb of Boston, already raised the smoking age to 21 in 2005.

This rule turned out to be very controversial. Some people claimed 18 was a reasonable legal age. However, city officials of NYC also said that the earlier people began smoking, the more likely they were to become addicted. Meanwhile, cigarette manufacturers have suggested young adult smokers may just turn to the black market merchants. I personally think this legislation is reasonable, but I doubt what positive effects it could bring.
